The EAL Approach and Power Behind Working With Horses
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an effective approach to human and leadership development through the eyes of the horse. When examining herd dynamics, we will find powerful metaphors for leadership, teamwork, non-verbal communication, setting boundaries and for illustrating group and family dynamics. Horses show us a different way of relating with ourselves, others, and our environment, while teaching us awareness, trust, integrity and respect through interactive exercises where “everyone matters”.
Implementing carefully designed team exercises, the Horse Empower EAL programs use the nature of herd dynamics to provide participants with an opportunity to engage in team emphasized exercises and in turn find themselves learning valuable skills in a fun and exciting atmosphere.
EAL can benefit everyone. No riding or previous horse experience is required; all exercises are done from the ground. EAL is an innovative approach that has proven to be the stimulus of respectful relationships and active involvement.
The size of the horse is a factor for most clients. Accomplishing a task with a 1200 pound horse requires utilization of leadership skills and confidence, which provide wonderful metaphors when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life. Don’t let a 700 pound pony fool you, they require a most organized and assertive person! Most importantly, horses have the ability to mirror instant, honest feedback based on exactly what human body language is telling them. Many people will comment, “This horse is stubborn. This horse doesn’t like me,” However, the lesson to be learned is if the person gets clear with their intention, and changes their approach, the horses respond differently – this concept not only fits naturally into the process of developing strong leaders, it is a practical approach to teaching youth alternative skills to leverage when faced with difficult challenges and negative influences.
